There has never been–and never will be–another nightclub that could rival Studio 54 in glamour, energy, and wild creativity. This catalog accompanies an exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum that tells the story of how Studio 54 became a unique symbol of an era.

Since its opening in 1977, Studio 54 celebrated spectacle and promised an endless parade of anything and everything. Although the studio only lasted three years, it served as a catalyst that brought together some of the world’s most famous, creative and weirdest people. It quickly became known for a roster of celebrities of all ages and a uniquely chic clientele of superstars and freaks of all races and sexual preferences, who often appeared half-dressed or in costume. From the cutting-edge lighting and sound system to the elaborate sets that changed on a whim, changing the setting and atmosphere, this was the beginning of nightclub as performance art.

Now the Brooklyn Museum is organizing the first exhibition devoted to the nightclub as a bell of New York cultural life. More than 650 objects – fashion, photographs, drawings, films and music – as well as videos, films and soundtracks create an immersive experience, and the exhibition design is inspired by the original lighting and atmosphere of the club. Highlights include never-before-published costume designs by artist Antonio Lopez and recently discovered sets, as well as ephemera salvaged by the club’s staff and interviews with cultural luminaries who have been there.

Telling the story of this legendary club, as well as being a complement to the exhibition, Studio 54: Night Magic serves as a document of the era, displaying the wild energy and provocative creativity of this most important cultural moment.
